Additional Military Tax Software Options

The IRS Free File Alliance Program is a cooperation with participating top brand-name tax software companies that offer free online tax filing options for military personnel to prepare and e-file their federal tax return for free. These participating companies provide this service through the IRS and some may offer free state tax filing as well.

Top rated tax software options help military personnel and their families take advantage of tax deductions that they would normally miss without proper guidance. Many armed force service members make the mistake of using the shortest, simplest form with an estimated 80 percent or more of active service members filing a 1040-EZ.  Unfortunately, with this approach there could be many tax deductions they are missing. Don't let this happen to you!!!

Military Installation Tax Support Centers

Many U.S. military installations around the world offer tax support services to their members and families for free. These income tax filing services assist military personnel and heir families through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program that is sponsored by the IRS. These VITA sites are staffed by IRS trained volunteers that are there to provide assistance with some of the more complicated military-specific tax issues armed force members may face, such as combat zone tax benefits.

Additional information can be found on the Military.com website including a Base Guide for contacting local installations to locate their tax centers, scheduling appointments, and determine necessary documentation needed to prepare your tax return.
