Military OneSource offers a free electronic tax filing service for U.S. Armed Force Troops. The Military OneSource Free Tax Filing Services Features H&R Block At Home® Online Tax Return Preparation.

Those who are eligible under the Military OneSource tax program, can complete, save, and file their federal and up to three state returns online for free with the H&R Block At Home® tool. To access this free service, you must start your return from the Military OneSource H&R Block At Home® page.

H&R Block At Home® is a great choice for military personnel. It's fast, secure, and FREE for qualifies service members. With HR Block, you can prepare and file your taxes from the comfort of your own home, and at your own pace. Start by creating your own secure user log-on ID and password through the Military OneSource H&R Block At Home® service. Then you can save, close, log-out and return to your tax preparation documents as often as you find necessary to complete your tax preparation and filing process at your own pace.

Note: if your tax return is a simple 1040ez, you may be just as good off using the H&R Block Free Edition that works well for anyone that has a simple tax return to prepare without the need for extra forms.

This Free Edition is the same free tax preparation program you may have used previously through the Military OneSource. If you created an H&R Block at Home® account before, all your login credentials should still work for your account and you can access your previous year's personal tax documentation online through this process.

There are several other tax-filing resources that also may work for you.

  • Free File — The Internal Revenue Service offers FREE tax filing  through the Free File Alliance which is a partnership between the (IRS) and several top tax software companies.
  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) — This Volunteer Military Income Tax Assistance Program provides FREE tax advice, tax preparation, tax return filing, along with other tax support to military members and their families.

The IRS begins processing e-filed returns around mid January annually. Should you complete your return using the H&R Block at Home® service offered through Military OneSource prior to the processing start date, it will be held until the IRS efile system opens. H&R Block will then submit your return to the IRS once efile opens.

Remember, to access the free military version of H&R Block At Home®, you must start your tax return from the Military OneSource H&R Block At Home® page. Once you click the link you will be required to log in to Military OneSource. From there you will be sent to a site containing additional information on tax return preparation, along with the link to the Military OneSource free H&R Block At Home® service so you can start your tax preparation process.

Who is Eligible for this FREE Military Tax Service?

All Active-duty U.S. service members including the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and National Guard as well as members of the Reserve (regardless of activation status). This includes members of the Coast Guard Reserve activated as part of the Department of the Navy under Title 10 authority.

Additionally, spouses and dependent children of the service members noted above, who are authorized in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS).

Any family member who is responsible for taking care of the affairs for a active service member (in one of the services noted above) when the service member is deployed on active duty.

Any severely injured service member from one of the services above, or the designated family member of a severely injured member who is incapable of handling their own affairs.

Medically retired military personnel are eligible until 180 days past their retirement date, End of Tour of Service, or discharge date.
